Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I seek professional help?

The aim of any psychological treatment is to help improve your mental health and well-being by improving your understanding of yourself. When you have a better understanding of the reasons why you do the things you do, you create more choice about how you act, think and feel.

Sometimes this means discussing or confronting fearful events and painful memories. It is common to feel uncomfortable talking at first but over time this generally gets easier as your relationship builds with the therapist.

Do you have a waiting list?

Some of our clinicians may have a waiting list and others will have immediate availability. Please inform reception if you wish to see someone immediately and we will be able to allocate someone who is available within the shortest time frame.

Do I need a referral from my GP?

No, you do not need a referral from your GP in order to receive treatment at Integral Psychology. However, you may be eligible for a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP which will allow you to receive a Medicare rebate after each session. If you do not wish to get a mental health care plan and/or referral, you are welcome to see one of our clinicians independently and you may claim against your private health fund if you prefer.

How long each session is and how many sessions should I have?

The number and duration of your sessions will depend on your individual circumstances; and so there isn’t always a set duration or number of sessions.

Consultations generally last 50 minutes and will be tailored to your individual needs.

What ages do you see?

There is no minimum age requirement to access treatment at Integral Psychology. Each clinician is able to work with different age groups ranging from children (0-12 years) and young adults/adolescents (12-24 years) to adults. If you have any questions regarding which clinician would be best for you, please give our reception team a call and they will be happy to fit you with the right clinician.

What should I expect in my first session?

Your first 1-2 sessions will be comprised of a clinical assessment. This is where your clinician will receive background information from you regarding family, circumstances, past mental health/medical history, and any other information you believe is important to your situation. Following the assessment, your clinician will inform you of your diagnosis (if applicable) and an evidence based treatment plan tailored to you.

Is the information discussed during my appointment confidential?

Information discussed during your appointment is 100% confidential and information regarding your treatment can only be disclosed to other parties with your written consent. There are some limits to confidentiality according to state and federal law where psychologists must provide information in the following instances:

  1. If a psychologist becomes aware of the risk of physical injury to yourself or anyone else.
  2. Details of a serious offence under the Major Crimes Act
  3. Information requested by a subpoena from the court of law
Our aim is to increase personal awareness for the creation of choices, improved health and wellbeing.
